As part of its Ramadan lecture series,The World Muslim Communities Council (TWMCC) organized a virtual lecture titled “A Dialogue Between Islamic Thought and Chinese Thought: A Perspective of a Young Scholar.”
During the lecture, Tao Chen, from the Department of Philosophy at the University of Granada in Spain spoke about her journey to Islam and how it began in its early stages.
She said: “I grew up in China, where education focuses on abilities and skills. My choice of Islam and my conversion to it was a philosophical journey that I undertook on my own.”
Chen pointed out that in China, it is not easy to distinguish between Muslims and non-Muslims, as people generally dress the same. She also noted that Islam has long been present in China, where the worship of God has deep roots.
She added: “We do not eat pork in China. There is only one God in the universe. I learned to pronounce the Shahada in both Arabic and Chinese.”
Chen further explained that Islam opened her mind to a positive way of thinking that she discovered herself, saying: “I deeply reflected on how a person could worship idols made of stone or wood.”
