The World Muslim Communities Council (TWMCC) held an online lecture titled: “Ramadan and the Qur’an: The Secret to Reviving Hearts”, delivered by Sheikh Saadullah Khan, CEO of Islamia College – Cape Town, South Africa, as part of the Council’s series of lectures during the holy month of Ramadan.
During the lecture, Sheikh Saadullah Khan highlighted the virtues of the holy month of Ramadan, noting that the entire Islamic community is currently united in observing the fast, which reflects the sense of unity among Muslims. Consequently, fasting is one of the most important pillars of Islam.
He added that fasting is a form of exercise for both the body and the soul, differing from Hajj and Zakat, because it is an inward act of worship, unlike other obligations that are outwardly visible.
Sheikh Khan explained that fasting serves as a spiritual programme for personal development and societal improvement from a collective perspective, focusing on self-discipline, moral refinement, and good character.
He also discussed how to make the most of Ramadan, stating that when we emerge from the month of fasting, we should be better than we were at the start, noting that achieving this depends on how we prioritise and uphold our values.
He stressed the importance of making rational decisions that reflect our maturity and personal integrity, and living in a way that brings out the best in our character.
Furthermore, he highlighted that Islam encourages kindness, righteousness, sincerity in deeds and intentions, and performing good acts while always keeping God in mind.
In conclusion, Sheikh Khan emphasised the need to maintain taqwa (God-consciousness) in our hearts, as it is the highest value of the human soul, affirming that the God-conscious are the best among people.
